The Fingerprint Department is a crucial investigative wing under the Criminal Investigation Department of the Maharashtra Police.
This local forensic unit supports the Jalna District Police in the scientific identification of individuals through fingerprint analysis, playing a vital role in solving crimes and maintaining law and order.
Key Responsibilities :
- Crime Scene Fingerprint Collection:
Visit crime scenes to collect latent (invisible) and visible fingerprints.
Use scientific methods and materials like fingerprint powders, fuming chambers, and gel lifters.
- Fingerprint Matching & Identification :
Compare collected prints with the existing fingerprint database.
Use AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) to identify suspects and repeat offenders.
- Criminal Record Management :
Maintain fingerprint records of arrested individuals in the Jalna district.
Update the local database for easy retrieval and sharing with higher authorities.
- Support to Investigating Officers :
Assist Jalna police stations with fingerprint examination reports for ongoing investigations.
Provide expert input in identifying unknown persons and linking suspects to crime scenes.
- Expert Reporting & Court Assistance :
Prepare expert fingerprint comparison reports for court submission.
Appear as expert witnesses when required in judicial proceedings.
